Other November Holidays

It's Thanksgiving, pilgrims, turkeys, and all of that.  It's a good day, a feast day, full of yum yum.  I wish a Happy Thanksgiving to all.

I've been looking into so many new things lately, that I decided to poke around and see what other November holidays or celebrations I could find.  I've always been interested in ancient things, ancient ways, ancient meanings.  Growing up it was the Greek and Roman as well as all things Egyptian.  Later as an adult, all things Jewish.  Now, Celtic and Norse, can't seem to get enough.  Funny, American has never made the list.  Wonder what that's about.

Anyway, poking around I found some interesting things.  I'll have to dive into some of it when I'm not suppose to be getting ready for the family feast thing, but thought I'd post a list for now so I can come back to it.

Things that make me go, hmm.

  • 1 November
Samhain / Festival of the Dead / Third Station of the Year / All Saints Day / Isia
Samhain is the beginning of winter in the natural year. The third station of the year, awakening, is therefore a time of letting go, when the seed falls to earth from its mother plant. It is customary to light bonfires (tindle-fires) at sunset of this day in honour of the dead. The Egyptian festival of Isis, the Isia, lasts for three days, and reenacts the dismemberment and restoration of Osiris.
  • 2 November
    All Souls Day
Before becoming a Christian festival this day was marked with celebrations of Woden (Odin) as god of the dead, including plays enacting the mysteries of life, death, and rebirth.
  • 8 November
    Mania / Gwynn ap Nudd
The Roman festival of Mania commemerates the Manes (spirits of the underworld). In Celtic tradition Gwynn ap Nudd, the Lord of Faerie, permits the door to the lower worlds to be opened for a day at Glastonbury Tor.
  • 10 November
    Nincnevin / Martinmas Eve
The Scots Pagan festival of Nincnevin honours the Goddess Dianna.
  • 11 November
    Martinmas / Einherjar
This day marks the full onset of winter. It is the festival of the Einherjar, the spiritual warriors who guard Valhalla.
  • 13 November
    Feronia
The Roman festival of Feronia worships Feronia as well as Juno, Minerva, and Jupiter.
  • 16 November
    Hecate Night
Sunset marks the beginning of Hecate Night, when the threefold goddess of Wicca (Perseis) is celebrated.
  • 20 November
    Praetextatus and Paulina
This Greek festival commemerates Praetextatus and Paulina, the guardians of the Eleusinian Mysteries.
  • 22 November
    Ydalir / Artemis Calliste
This is the Northern festival of Ydalir, the Valley of Yews, and commerorates the Norse god Ullr.
  • 25 November
    Persephone / Proserpina / Women's Merrymaking Day
Commemerates the Goddess of the Underworld, Queen of the Shades, and Ruler of the Souls of the Dead. She is known variously as Persephone, Prosperina, Kore, Arianrod, and Catherine. It is also Women's Merrymaking Day, a festival of the celebration of women's mysteries.

Today sees 2 cards

Today sees the pulling of 2 cards.  The first is mine, the second  I pulled for a friend.

Mine...
The 9 of Swords

Worry
Guilt
Anguish

Not the most pleasant card.  But it doesn't always indicate major distress.  Often it is just a sign of some element of unhappiness or trouble ~ a vulnerable spot in your life.  Often a warning that the path you are going down may be a difficult one.

Celtic:  Madness

Viking:  Svipdagr ~ death, disappointment, help

The one I pulled for my friend...

Be Creative
Be Enthusiastic
Be Confident
Be Courageous

The Page of Wands is a messenger bringing you opportunities for passion.  He delivers real chances to experience creativity, courage, charm and inspiration ~ the wonders of the Wands suit.

Celtic:  The Warrior

Viking:  The Giant Fjolvarr ~ Teacher, dark haired young man, good understanding

I would rather have pulled the Page of Wands than the 9 of Swords... that sure sounds like more fun.  And my Viking deck says it comes with a dark haired young man... hey... I want one ;)  Totally a more fun card.

The Moon

Fear
Illusion
Imagination
Bewilderment

Celtic:  XVIII Sadbh ~ Sadbh is lured away from Almuhin.  With an illusion which re-evoked the appearance of Flinn and of his hounds, his spouse, Sadbh, was lured far away and was never glimpsed again by mortal eyes.

Illusions, visions, dreams, gentleness, deception, night.

Viking:  XVIII Mani ~ The Vikings viewed masculine aspect in the moon and feminine aspect in the sun.  The moon is the nocturnal light that captures light and controls it:  A magical being who dies in is born again for all eternity.  According to Viking myth, Mani was also a man who, while he was dying, gave himself up to the sun and became its slave.

Visions, magic, eccentricity, mistakes due to whims

Freya's weekend

My little blog over here, poor little thing, I still have no clue what to do with her.  But, that's ok, it's nice to have a more low maintenance play to escape to.  And it's pretty too.

I had very high aspirations this weekend of getting all kinds of things done so I could start posting them over here... study more about the runes, the Norse gods and goddesses, even just... read a book.  Nope.  None of that.

I had great plans of jewelry making with the stones, crystals and beads I've spent a virtual fortune on, turns out, that's not like riding a bike.  Been a long long time since I've made things like that and... yeah, can't remember how to do what the mind's eye sees.  I did manage to makes several pendants and a bracelet I would categorize as... what the hell IS that.

We'll just keep trying before I call it jewelry.  Or wear it.  Or, well, even show it to anyone.  Perhaps a shopping trip today for some NON sterling silver supplies and wire to relearn with would be wise.  Perhaps... I should have done that in the first place.  Wrecking the sterling... sucky that.

I did manage to clean Bodhi's tank without sucking him into the siphon thingy.  That's a bonus.  Of course, I can't siphon to save my life and the suction wasn't really sucking so... he was pretty safe.  Did freak him out pretty good, poor fishie.  He seems less spastic thou with some fresh water in there, so bonus that.  I think.

Threw in some plant bulbs too, since he has managed to strip most of his plants bare.  He's a little piggy that one.  Nibble...?  Yeah, not my fishie.  Stripped those goodies right down to the stalks.  Best go get him some more plants I think.  Guess he likes plants.  NomNom.

So all in all, the weekend was pretty unproductive.  Lots of playing, not much by way of accomplishing, but hey... that's ok too.  Considering the major upheaval going on all around me... I'll take it.  It was fun, I felt good, so... I won.

=)

Today's Card: The Tower

Sudden Change
Release

Sudden, dramatic upheaval or reversal of fortune.  Disruption occurred because it was needed, find tremendous release that you have finally been forced in a anew direction; often leads to a burst of insight about your situation and reaching new levels of understanding.

Celtic:  Aillen Mac Midhna ~ Arrogance, pride, poverty, exile, ruin, prison

Viking:   Asgard ~ Splendid home of the gods.  Symbol of their power and their arrogance.  The gods punished the requests of the giant who built the external walls because they were convinced of their superiority over the primitive race.  This celestial city will be the first to fall when it is time for Ragnarok.

Fishie has a name!

Yay fishie!  He finally has a name.  I would like to introduce you to... Bodhi.  Bodhi the fishie.

Oddly enough, when I was looking up the proper spelling of Bodhi, because well, I'd forgotten, I came across this...
Bodhi (Sanskrit: बोधि) is both a Pāli and Sanskrit word traditionally translated as "enlightenment", but frequently (and more accurately) translated as "awakening" or "to know". The word "buddha" means "enlightened one." Although its most common usage is in the context of Buddhism, bodhi is also a technical term, with various usages, in other Indian philosophies and traditions.
Yeah, that's not where he got his name, even though all that is pretty cool.

Bodhi, got his name from...  my favorite movie surfer dude...

Bodhi.  heehee. =D

Oh yeah, that would be the beautiful Patrick Swayze, from Point Break.  Bodhi.  Crazy, sky diving, bank robbing, beautiful surfer dude...Bodhi.  Mmmmm, I soooo loved him.

Fishie, it turns out, is crazy I think.  Quite a spastic little dude.  And just loves to ride the filter wash, over and over and over.  He likes to play in the bubbles too.  From bubbles to surfing the wave, over and over and over.

When he isn't devouring his beautiful live plants, little glutton, even ripping them up from the roots he gets so friggin' nuts-o, he is just a surfing away.  Over and over... and over again.

So, there you go.  Crazy, spastic surfer dude...

Bodhi.

heehee, I still call him fishie, or little buddy, but hey... whatever.

Go fishie go.  uh, I mean Bodhi.  Go Bodhi go.

Til next time.

Have a totally awesome day.

=D

Tree of Life...

Yggdrasil

In Norse mythologyYggdrasil (pronounced /ˈɪɡdrəsɪl/; from Old Norse Yggdrasill, pronounced [ˈyɡːˌdrasilː]) is an immense tree that is central in Norse cosmology; theworld tree, and around the tree exist nine worlds. It is generally considered to mean "Ygg's (Odin's) horse".
Yggdrasil is attested in the Poetic Edda, compiled in the 13th century from earlier traditional sources, and the Prose Edda, written in the 13th century by Snorri Sturluson. In both sources, Yggdrasil is an immense ash tree that is central and considered very holy. The gods go to Yggdrasil daily to hold their courts. The branches of Yggdrasil extend far into the heavens, and the tree is supported by three roots that extend far away into other locations; one to the well Urðarbrunnr in the heavens, one to the springHvergelmir, and another to the well Mímisbrunnr. Creatures live within Yggdrasil, including the wyrm (dragon) Níðhöggr, an unnamed eagle, and the stags Dáinn, Dvalinn, Duneyrr and Duraþrór.
Conflicting scholarly theories have been proposed about the etymology of the name Yggdrasill, the possibility that the tree is of another species than ash, the relation to tree lore and to Eurasian shamanic lore, the possible relation to the trees Mímameiðr and LæraðrHoddmímis holt, the sacred tree at Uppsala, and the fate of Yggdrasil during the events of Ragnarök.

Yggdrasil (1895) by Lorenz Frølich.
Yggdrasil comes from Old Norse Yggdrasill.[1] In English, the spellings YggdrasilYggdrasill, and Ygdrasil are used, as shown by entries in English dictionaries and encyclopedias.[2][3][4] It is usually pronounced /ˈɪɡdrəsɪl/ in English, and only rarely /ˈyɡdrəsiːl/[5] because the sound [y] does not exist in English and most English speakers are therefore unaccustomed to producing it.
The generally accepted meaning of Old Norse Yggdrasill is "Odin's horse", based on the etymology that drasill means "horse" and Ygg(r) is one of Odin's many names. The Poetic Edda poem Hávamál describes how Odin sacrificed himself to himself by hanging in a tree, making this tree Odin's gallows. This tree was apparently Yggdrasil, and gallows can be called "the horse of the hanged", so Odin's gallows developed into the expression "Odin's horse", which then became the name of the tree.[1]
Nevertheless, scholarly opinions regarding the precise meaning of the name Yggdrasill vary, particularly on the issue of whether Yggdrasill is the name of the tree itself or if only the full term askr Yggdrasils refers specifically to the tree, where Old Norse askr means "ash tree". According to this interpretation, askr Yggdrasils means "the world tree upon which 'the horse [Odin's horse] of the highest god [Odin] is bound'". Both of these etymologies rely on a presumed but unattested *Yggsdrasill.[1]
A third interpretation, presented by F. Detter, is that the name Yggdrasill refers to the word yggr ("terror"), yet not in reference to the Odinic name, and so Yggdrasill would then mean "tree of terror, gallows". F. R. Schröder has proposed a fourth etymology according to which yggdrasill means "yew pillar", deriving yggia from *igwja (meaning "yew-tree"), and drasill from *dher- (meaning "support").[1]

New blog...

Yay for my new blog.  No idea what I'm going to do with it, but... I like it.

I think I'll use it for my new journey of learning about my new tarot cards, all the awesome crystals and gemstones I have and all that cool new stuff.  All the new things I'm about to learn about runes and Norse mythology.  Oh, and the alternative healing things too.

Eventually.

For now, for my first post... fishie.  I'll put up pics of my new fishie and his cool new little home that's coming along quite nicely, if I do say so myself.

Fishie makes me happy.  And yeah, totally chills me out.  I like to watch him, I find it very relaxing.  And he's not quite so afraid of me anymore.  Well, some, but... whatever.

Let me properly introduce you.  This... is fishie.

Hi fishie. He still needs a name.  But, who cares.

Yesterday, fishie got that cool little pagota thing and new plants.  Oh, and bubbles.  Not sure I did the bubbles thing right, but he seems to like them.  He rides the bubble wave and seems to play in them.  And eat them.

Maybe fishie is crazy.  Like me =)  We'll get along fine I think.  heehee.  Two crazy peas in a pod.  Yep... a pod of crazy peas.

heehee.

Ok, moving on.  This... is fishies new home...with the new bubbles he likes to ride the bubble waves...

That's fishie riding the wave. =)

And eating the bubbles.  =)

Go little fishie dude.

Here's hoping thats good, don't know a damn thing about fishies.

What I do know... yay for fishies.

=D
